Ectaco jetBook and jetBook Lite

Ectaco jetBookWhen I became interested in buying an ebook reader, the first thing I discovered was that there are a mountain of choices out there, and which one was best for me was not immediately clear. Ectaco jetBook, Kindle, SONY and most recently the Apple iPad, among others, all offer excellent digital readers with varying feature sets, costing from around $150 to over $1000. With that kind of price range, there just had to be some significant differences between them. I finally settled on the jetBook, and here’s why; what I wanted to do, primarily, was read books. And, if possible, listen to my digital music library while doing so.

ECTACO, the maker of jetBook and jetBook Lite, is not nearly as well-known as some other big players in the digital reader marketplace, but I discovered that they may actually be the most experienced in the field. They have a twenty year history of providing state, federal, and international governments with electronic translators, dictionaries, and language and translation software. Offering an ebook reader just seems like a natural extension of what they’ve been doing for two decades. And so they introduced jetBook.

Billed as The Ultimate Pocket Library, the jetBook Reader is one of the lightest, most convenient ebook readers I’ve ever held in my hand. And, it really will fit into your pocket. It weighs only 7.5 ounces, and can store thousands of books in dozens of the world’s most popular languages. Its five inch, high-resolution VGA reflective screen is bright and sharp from any viewing angle up to nearly 180 degrees. And with multiple fonts, in adjustable sizes, you will find one that’s a perfect fit for your reading comfort; whether you’re reading a best selling novel or an important business document; in portrait mode or landscape.

When it comes to supported document formats, Ectaco jetBook and jetBook Lite do not disappoint. You can listen to your MP3 music library while reading any document in .txt, .pdf, .fb2, .jpg, .epub, .mobi, .prc and .rtf file formats, among others. An SD card slot accepts cards up to 32 GB in capacity, allowing you to take an unlimited library anywhere you go. Preloaded with the CIA World Factbook, jetBook also lets you access bidirectional dictionaries for most European languages. Ectaco has incorporated the best of their digital translation experience into the jetBook and jetBook Lite.

With an average reading time of more than 20 hours between recharges of the internal Li-ion polymer battery, you almost never have to worry about losing power at an inopportune moment, even on the longest airline flight. And the included AC/DC adapter means that a quick recharge is almost always close at hand. You can even charge it up from your laptop computer using the provided USB cable. And, jetBook is compatible with your Mac, PC, or Linux based computer system.

If you’d prefer a reader that uses ordinary AA batteries, then jetBook Lite is your choice. ECTACO has managed to include almost all the great features of the jetBook Reader in the jetBook Lite, and still lower the price tag. That makes jetBook Lite not only the most affordable eBook Reader on the market, but one with top features and performance. You give up some storage capacity, only 1500 books or so will fit on the jetBook Lite, but you still have the SD slot that allows all the add on space you can carry.

For me, jetBook was a no-brainer. The most portable, most feature-packed, most versatile ebook reader I found that performed exactly the tasks I wanted it to do. And the price is hundreds less than virtually all of its competitors. There’s a lot more to learn about Ectaco jetBook and jetBook Lite.
